A weekly group drum-set class for 7th graders, taught by a drummer who performs and records professionally. Students build confidence, mastery, and musicality alongside other drummers at every level, all working toward putting those skills together on the kit.

Every week, students play something difficult in front of other students. That’s the point. They learn to center themselves under pressure, handle it when it doesn’t go perfectly, and come back next week and do it again.
Nobody in the room is judging anybody. That’s what The Drum Community is about. A safe space for anyone to try, and everyone to grow together.
Drums are the reason they show up. But they take away so much more.
What your drummer will build
TIMING + COUNTING
The whole band is listening to the drums, whether they know it or not. Solid time is what holds a song together, and it's the first thing we build.
READING
We read music every single week, so your drummer can walk into any room and know what to do with the page in front of them.
TECHNIQUE + STICK CONTROL
The hard stuff is hard because of technique. A drum roll, a fast fill, anything that sounds effortless when a pro does it, comes down to control built one habit at a time.
DRUM SET INDEPENDENCE
Hi-hat, snare, and kick all going at the same time, each doing its own thing. It's the reason a beat sounds like a beat, and it's the skill this class is built around.

1. Warm Up
We get our bodies and minds ready to play.
2. Review
We revisit last week's skill.
3. Play It
Every student plays the drum set. Grooves, fills, and songs.
4. Build
We introduce the next lesson, so you know what to practice.

Nate Smeding has spent his life behind the kit, on stages, in studios, and in classrooms. He actively performs and records with GENTRI, Matt and Savanna Shaw, Emma Nissen, and his own project, Allbrook Station.
